It’s only when the mind is free from the old that it meets everything anew,
and in that there is joy

Children grow at different rates and hence have different timings of maturation.

Based on this there are certain “Windows of Trainability” for speed, strength, flexibility and endurance for each child. These windows of trainability can be worked on when the growth of a child is monitored scientifically over a period of time.
Unfortunately in a school environment bias is placed on “spotting talented children” who simply look bigger stronger and run faster. In pediatric exercise science these children are referred to as “Early Maturers”. These children are often picked for many teams and hence get trained more than others. The bulk of the children who mature later do not experience training or competition.
They normally constitute about 10% of the school. It is unfortunate that these children taking part in competition represent100% of the schools’ physical education efficiency.
The true efficiency of a school’s physical education lies in the fitness of the entire population of the school

What are the difficulties with the current      approaches?
  • Short term objectives
  • Misconceptions about children doing resistance training and its effect on adult height.
  • Adult training methods being used for children
  • Priority on competition outcomes
  • Competitions based on age not on maturity
  • Fundamental skill acquisition neglected for one sport specific skill
  • Young athletes compete in many sports without any basic athletic training
  • Low teacher to student ratio

   Consequences:

  • High Injury rate
  • Children missing key “ windows of trainability for speed   and strength”
  • Bias towards early maturers
  • Limited recovery time
  • Burn out due to inability to cope
  • Coaches having inadequate knowledge of maturation and  physiological development of children
  • Majority of children missing out on a positive sporting experience in school

   Benefits of the Program

  • Periodical programs spread over the year
  • Individualized programs
  • Weight loss/gain can be individualized
  • Child learns to train instead of just single sport repetitive movement patterns
  • Child delays specialization in a particular sport until he feels physical and mental readiness.
  • Allows children to play a multitude of sports in schools and prepares them physically for specialized sports outside schools.
  • Benefits of summer programs.
  • Tapping the child’s potential from a young age.
  • Teaches children the benefits of hard work and team play
